You can file for a patent and of course this is not an easy process, there is a lot of time behind trying to get a patent on your product, but during this time you can put a patent pending notice on your product so other inventors can watch out and get the heads up that your application is currently pending. Some people however, will try and use this patent pending fraudulently so a good way to check up on this is that these patent pending usually have a application number on them.
